Metadata is information about the session(s) in which a user made edits to a Workbook. Unfortunately, there's a great deal of confusion over the issue of Excel Metadata and complete solutions for removing unwanted metadata types. As an attorney and IT veteran, I can assure you that metadata poses a real liability risk for lawyers and non-lawyers, in that most users have no clue that Excel Metadata exists and what can be done about it. The problem is most organizations have no enterprise wide policies with clear direction regarding when to use Excel Metadata. Solutions however do exist at the desktop and enterprise server level that provide complete protection against unwanted Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Metadata.
