    Outlook thinks 'File As' (Contacts) field is blank (Outlook 2003)

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by DaveA on 04-Feb-05 14:58. Added URL code)</P>Hi all - more weirdness to report. I have a user who enters and files most of his contacts by the Company name. 9 times out of 10, he doesn't even enter a person's name in the Full Name field. Today, for no apparent reason, all of those Contacts that have Company info, but no Full Name info, are showing up as blanks. If you open the contacts, you can clearly see that there is something listed in the Company field, and that the File As field lists the company name. But upon clicking the down arrow on the File As field, and rechoosing the Company name (as that's the only option)...Outlook throws up an error that the "File As" field can not be blank. <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45> I found this little tidbit on the MS knowledgebase:
    but they don't explain why this happens, OR give a sufficient way to resolve it (since we get errors when trying their resolution). The only thing I've found is to Cut the name from the Company field, and paste it right back in. Then Outlook somehow "sees" the information and files it correctly (rather than as a blank). Anyone seen this before and know a quick workaround, cause he's got QUITE a few that are messed up. Also...he just recently got a Blackberry and started using it (synching it with Outlook, etc) Could this be part of the problem?

    Thanks all - Sat.

    I usually enter the Company Name into the Full Name field in those situations. You might be able to automate the corrections by running code something like this, but first test it on a copy of the Contacts Folder:

    Sub ResetBlankFileAsContacts()
    Dim fldrSel As MAPIFolder
    Dim lngC As Long

    Set fldrSel = Application.GetNamespace("MAPI").PickFolder
    If Not fldrSel Is Nothing Then
    If fldrSel.DefaultItemType = olContactItem Then
    For lngC = 1 To fldrSel.Items.Count
    With fldrSel.Items(lngC)
    If .FileAs = "" And Len(.CompanyName) And Not (Len(.FullName)) Then
    .FullName = .CompanyName <font color=448800>' you may not want to let this line do it's thing</font color=448800>
    .FileAs = .CompanyName
    End If
    End With
    Next lngC
    MsgBox "Not a Contact Folder"
    End If
    End If

    Set fldrSel = Nothing
    End Sub
