    seeking contract support for MS Office (2K/XP/2K3)

    I am in charge of computer support for my employer. We have about 700 workstations with MS Office installed (Professional versions of 2000, XP, or 2003, including some Visio and MapPoint). Our IS Dept. has never had the staffing needed to handle the "how do I" kind of user questions. We have always told users right up front that we limit ourselves to installation and environment and version conflict support, and all else is peer-supported. In the past. this has worked fairly well overall, but the trend is downward. We still do not have the staff resources to do this level of support, and have no plans to add same. What I would like to find is a person or company to outsource MS Office support to. We have 70 locations scattered over the US and Canada. While it would be nice to get 8x5 support across all time zones (8-8 Eastern time, M-F), some compromise could probably be made there. My preference would be to have a subscription arrangement covering unlimited issues. I could live with a fixed price deal covering a maximum number of users/incidents, and pay as we go after, if the terms were "right". My best guess is that maximum calls would be 2-3 per day, I can't imagine a day with >10 (the genie/bottle effect can be difficult to account for. Limits on the number of contact persons per site could be negotiated. If any subscriber here has the capability to provide this service, or direct experience with a third party that they can recommend, I'd appreciate hearing from you. We are a private company, execution of our NDA would be required. I *do* check references. Experience with Star Office/Open Office would be a plus, as we are planning a pilot study this summer, but this is optional as any wholesale change would be at least 2 years off.     If you find a service that, after a decent interval, you can recommend, you're welcome to post it back here.

    I personally am a strong believer in cultivating Office power users. People generally like to be of use to their co-workers and to have additional opportunities for on-the-job training. In some cases all you will need is a few books (and a link to the Lounge!) for those who seem the most inquisitive, while in other cases a more formal system might be required. By expanding the concept of Office support in this way, you can expect people to gradually become more efficient with the product as well as having their crises addressed.
