We have recently moved to a new server, and the mapped drives we all have at work have become very long as the Server Description in the Computer Name tab of System Properties was very long.

Thankfully the migration went well and everything is working well. So I am 'tidying up'!!

I have now changed the description to "" (nothing), but notice that this isn't reflected in the Mapped Drive names of the PC's that have already connected to the server. For PC's that have only just been used have the mapped drives without this original description <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

This led me to the registry where I found the following key [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerComputerDescriptions]
which had the description stored in it for our server name. I have changed this and ... the mapped drive names are now perfect!! Nice and short so you can see the Letter:

I then thought to implement this to all users (I have control of the log in batch files) using the REGEDIT /s command - but of course ( registry editing is disabled for normal users so this is not a practical solution.

Is there any other way of achieving this? Some how incorporating an /admin switch? or if I change the Computer Description to perhaps an empty space, or couple of characters?
