# Thread: Can you count?

1. ## Can you count?

Warning: this is a difficult puzzle!

The table below shows some numbers in the language of a faraway people.

<table border=1><td>number</td><td>name</td><td align=right>8</td><td>nolbov</td><td align=right>15</td><td>utxujbov</td><td align=right>49</td><td>utbov rapel attelbov</td><td align=right>50</td><td>utbov</td><td align=right>99</td><td>attelsut attelbov</td><td align=right>555</td><td>xotsutn xotbov rapel ut</td><td align=right>900</td><td>attelbovsut</td><td align=right>918</td><td>attelbovsut nolbovxujbov</td></table>
Study these examples carefully, then answer the following questions:

Which numbers are written here?
a) utsutn ut
nolsut rapel xot
c) attelbovsutn attelbovxujbov

How would these people write the following numbers?
d) 58
e) 80
f) 716

2. ## Re: Can you count?

So far....all I can say is holy cow. This may take a while.

3. ## Re: Can you count?

I didn't expect a solution within minutes... <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

4. ## Re: Can you count?

Just checking:

should <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">"xotsutn xotbov rapel ut" be "xotsut xotbov rapel ut"?</span hide>

5. ## Re: Can you count?

No, it's correct...

Thanks

7. ## Re: Can you count?

I don't remember ever seeing a puzzle from Hans - and now I know why!

8. ## Re: Can you count?

It is a slightly modified version of a puzzle that was offered to high school students earlier this week <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

<img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17>I think he was trying to say mine and Jezza's were too easy...he was showing us what a *real* hard puzzle was like

10. ## Re: Can you count?

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Hans, can I assume that these faraway people have as many fingers as you?</span hide>

11. ## Re: Can you count?

<img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Depends on whose account of how many hands he has you go by</span hide> <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

12. ## Re: Can you count?

The puzzle is based on the language of an existing people/tribe in Siberia. They use a method of numbering that is bizarre to us, but there is a system to it. I changed the words a bit to prevent Googling the solution.

13. ## Re: Can you count?

Two hints for those who want them:

1) <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">This is mostly a logic puzzle: try to combine the information provided by the examples. Mathematics is hardly involved, certainly no advanced maths.</span hide>

2) <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">The numbering system is basically decimal, although with a strange twist.</span hide>

14. ## Re: Can you count?

Thanks Hans

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> A couple of us are collaborating and we have come up with a number of soloutions where the syllables fit and then we get a twist as it does not compute. I had the idea of a base change which worked for a couple of the numbers...gave up.

At the moment I am thinking it could be similar to the Mayan system( where they used 1, 20,360 number tower) but not the same.

Anyway it is driving us nuts</span hide>
