# Thread: average vs. avg (2003)

1. ## average vs. avg (2003)

Silly question of the day:
Why does Excel have max and min functions but no avg?

2. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

The AVERAGE worksheet function is the equivalent of what is called AVG in some other applications.

3. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

understood, but my question was more to why maximum and minimum were abbreviated for the function name and average was not. Did Lotus copyright the @avg?

I finally set up autocorrect to have avg give me =average( as I continually transpose letters when I type....

4. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

You'd have to ask Microsoft. My guess would be that they thought AVERAGE was more user-friendly (for unexperienced users) than AVG. I don't think there is a copyright on AVG. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

John

Average is the least of my problems......How about CONCATENATE? I hate it <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

6. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

fortunately, that is one that I use rarely

try the autocorrect trick; e.g., conc will give you =concatenate when you enter the (

7. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

I was smiling at your top tip, thanks, I LOVE top tips and this is a very good one. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

8. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

of course, why be a piker?

instead of conc use c

<g>

9. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

....'cos while I have sat here I have:

conc=Concatenate(
co=Count(
coa=CountA(
cob=CountBlank(
coi=CountIf(

<img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

10. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

I'd rather use/say "catenate" than "concatenate"

11. ## Re: average vs. avg (2003)

I'd simply say : =JOIN()... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
