    Apparently Sony's CD copy protection violates Open Source copyright.

    Wearing my lawyer hat for a moment, I should point out that these licenses often are difficult to apply and that a developer can contact the copyright owner for a proprietary license (which may be granted for the money or denied on the grounds of principle). For this reason, finding some text strings won't be the end of the inquiry. But they are sure to generate a LOT of interest on the internet. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    For any company worrying about whether open source software might have been incorporated into their product, or into a product they are licensing, one available tool to analyze the code is Black Duck Software's protexIP product/service. Although the user can't rely on the reported "license conflicts" as a legal conclusion, its ability to automate the search for open source code fragments makes it an invaluable starting point to any "due diligence" project. (And no, I don't get a discount for saying this!)
