Thread: Free Beers for Bears

1. Free Beers for Bears

Jezza Bear had been working hard and had decided that he should meet up with his friends at the local pub. Now there are two pubs The Bear Inn and the Bear Tavern, the Bear Inn is in front of the Bear Tavern. They decided to go to the Bear Inn as they don't like a Bear behind...get it <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

At the Bear Inn they had heard that you got a free drink if you could prove to the barman on duty you were a mate of the landlord. To do this the barman would give you a number and you had to reply with another number as a way to prove the friendship and get the drink.

Al Bear Einstein is fascinated with algorithms and was determined to crack the codeand get a free drink even though he didn't know the landlord. He therefore went to the bar with two Foresters who were friends of the landlord.

The barman said "6" and the first forester said "6" and got a free drink
The barman said "12" and the second forester said "12" and got a free drink
The barman said a number X to Al Bear who replied "16" and got a free drink

What number X did the barman say to Al Bear?

<img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17>I know you are going to say 16 from the available data provided, but the answer will be no...sorry

hey, i'm just here for the free <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

guessing <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">18</span hide>

3. Re: Free Beers for Bears

Since John said <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">18 - which would have been my first guess</span hide>

I am going with <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">24 - double of 6=12, double 12 = 24</span hide>

4. Re: Free Beers for Bears

Scott and John

Get no free beer, try again <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

BTW, Al Bear has noticed there are two answers to this

5. Re: Free Beers for Bears

After two pints and half a bottle of wine I'm going for the obvious <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">16</span hide>

6. Re: Free Beers for Bears

I think it is time for a little clue, <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">write the barman's numbers down as words</span hide>

7. Re: Free Beers for Bears

How about <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">48</span hide>?

8. Re: Free Beers for Bears

<img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17>Why?

9. Re: Free Beers for Bears

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Well 6 is one unit - 12 was double - so 48 was a triple figure of 16. It just seemed logical to me for a change but maybe it isn't correct?</span hide> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

10. Re: Free Beers for Bears

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">thirteen, fourteen, eighteen <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> or nineteen.</span hide>

11. Re: Free Beers for Bears

OUCH ! ! ! ![<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">My head is startingh to hurt ...</span hide>

Skitterbug's logic sounds good. But based on the clue, I had another thought <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">amazingly enough between the pain</span hide>

My new answer is <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Fourteen !!!!

Answer based on following: Six has three letters (answer was 6 or 2X3), Twelve has six letters (answer was 12 or 2X6). So ...Sixteen has 7 letters, so answer would be 14 or 2X7.

But I still like Skitterbug's logic on this.</span hide>

I've decided I need an asperine before I get to <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> and drop down a <img src=/S/blackhole.gif border=0 alt=blackhole width=15 height=15>

12. Re: Free Beers for Bears

Well PeterL has provided 4 answers, two of which are correct but with no exclamation.

You however have provided the correct answer and the algorithm that Al Bear used to get this free beer.

Have a [choccy bar] and a [ <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> beer]

Oh yes...PeterL can have one too <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

13. Re: Free Beers for Bears

Hi Scott!

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">I thought my logic seemed logical too but it just wasn't the right logic so that left me - logically - out of the winner's circle!~!</span hide> <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I need a <img src=/S/coffeetime.gif border=0 alt=coffeetime width=32 height=48>

Sandy

I am making an unpresidented move here and awarding a runner up prize. Invariably these puzzles have different interpretations from the various logics. Al Bear Einstein worked out his algorithm in the desired way, you were using another so you are awarded a [choccy bar] to go with your <img src=/S/coffeetime.gif border=0 alt=coffeetime width=32 height=48> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
