SystemRestore (SP2)

The calendar in System Restore no longer shows System Checkpoints, but it does show an awful lot of Windows Defender Checkpoints. Has this taken over from automatic System Checkpoints?

Re: SystemRestore (SP2)

Windows Defender apparently creates a checkpoint each time you start Windows. I also have System checkpoints.
According to one of the replies in this newsgroup thread, you can turn off the creation of Windows Defender checkpoints as follows:

You can turn off the automatic Windows Defender Checkpoints by:

1. Open Regedit
2. Locate key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderScan
3. Right click on Scan key, select Permissions, and ensure Administrators Group access has Full Control
4. Add Value DisableRestorePoint in right panel for the Scan key, REG_DWORD set to 1
5. Right click on Scan key again, select Permissions, and ensure Administrators Group does not have Full Control checked
6. Close Regedit

Now, WD will not save Checkpoints, but the rest of the system still will.
